Reps Frown At 26% Capital Vote Release To SON
« on: September 26, 2013, 08:22:23 AM »

The House of Representatives Committee on Industry yesterday  expressed dissatisfaction with the 26% capital expenditure release to the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) as at August 2013.

Chairman of the Committee Rep Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo made this known while reacting to the presentation of the Director General of SON, Dr Joseph Ikemefuna Odumodu, when the committee visited the head office of the organization in Abuja on an oversight function.
Daily Trust gathered that out of the  N54 million  appropriated for capital projects for the organization, only N14 million  has been accessed whereas 87% of the overhead expenditure has been accessed.
The house committee also lamented the inadequate staff strength of the organization currently put at 1300 noting that the organization is grossly understaffed to execute its core mandate of enforcing the highest possible standard of products in the Nigeria
Hon Onawo also charged SON to beam its searchlight on the quality of cement in the country, the quality of fuel dispensed in the various filling station to curb adulteration that have resulted in loss of lives.
Other products recommended for close evaluation is the quality of power generating sets to curb excessive noise and smoke that are not environmentally friendly.
The committee also hinted at a bill to provide for stiffer penalty for substandard goods and confer  SON with more powers to enforce the law.
Dr Odumodu had earlier pleaded for more support from the legislators to tackle particularly importers and organized marketers who often put up strong  resistance to SON’s concerted effort at ridding the market of fake products, nothing that these groups even threaten to shutdown the market to incite public outcry against SON.

The committee is expected to continue its oversight to  the ultramodern laboratory of the SON undergoing construction in Lagos state before the week runs out.
